Reddit updated its iOS app to allow rich-link previews for shared content, the social media chat site said Tuesday. That makes it easier to see what someone texted your way before you click through.

Before now, you’d just see the URL and have nothing else to go on in terms of what was shared, short of words in the URL or an explanation in the sender’s text.

Reddit updates iOS app with rich-link previews and more

Reddit’s new rich-link preview gives you much more of an idea of what someone has shared with you than any words included in a plain-text URL would. And you never know when someone is going to bother explaining it in accompanying text.

The rich-link version offers a visual preview of the post sent via URL, giving the recipient more of a reason to click through (or not). It shows the subreddit name, comments and number of upvotes on the post.

Other new features

Now you'll be able to see more about what someone is sending you via URL on Reddit.

Reddit made a handful of other additions in the update, as it noted in a blog post:

  • A new “one-tap screenshot-sharing experience that allows users to share content without saving images to their device — meaning they can link back to the content rather than only sending a screenshot.”
• A new Instagram Stories button among the sharing options in the Reddit app makes it easier to share to Instagram. Clicking the button brings up a post preview of what will appear on Instagram.
• You can access new sharing options from a new custom share sheet you can see when you tap a post’s share icon. If you use certain sharing options a lot, they will appear at the top of the sheet for easy access.

In addition to the app update, Reddit said it will offer a new toolbox for publishers to more easily display Reddit content on their platforms, per Reddit’s notes.
