Nanoleaf opened up preorders for its newly Matter-enabled Essentials lineup of smart bulbs and light strips Wednesday.

Thanks to the Matter smart-home standard, they work with HomeKit and other smart-home platforms. But there is one catch regarding their use with HomeKit.

Nanoleaf Essentials smart lights

Nanoleaf’s new Essentials lights enabled for the Matter and Thread smart-home standards include bulbs with A19, BR30 and GU10 sockets plus 80-inch Light Strip “Smarter Kits” and 40-inch “Expansion Packs.”

And while Matter lets the products work with all smart-home platforms, including Apple’s HomeKit, there’s a reason why you might want to stick with Nanoleaf’s older, pre-Matter versions.

That’s because Matter doesn’t yet support the HomeKit-exclusive feature known as adaptive lighting. So if you just use HomeKit, you’ll be missing a feature with the new Essentials products.

Nanoleaf said it hopes Matter will start supporting adaptive lighting soon. In the meantime, its previous models support it when used with HomeKit and the Home app.

Alternatively, a similar function in the new lights called circadian lighting can automatically adjust color temperature over the course of a day.

The new bulbs and light strip are available for preorder now. Shipping dates vary from now until about April 20, Nanoleaf said.
