The best-selling PC game of the 20th century has been reborn as Myst Mobile. Anyone who wants to relive the classic, or play an amazing game for the first time, can install it on iPhone and iPad and start playing for free.

This isn’t a knockoff. Cyan, the developer of the original, calls its new version “the definitive mobile port.”

Myst was originally designed by Rand and Robyn Miller, brothers from the United States, who got started in game development by building interactive storybooks for children. In the early ’90s, when both were broke and living off rice and beans, the Millers decided it was time to make a game for adults.

They put together a small team of designers, artists and developers and began work (in HyperCard) on an adventure game with believable characters and a storyline that would be influenced by the player’s choices..

Myst was introduced for Mac and PC and quickly became a best seller powered by very positive reviews from critics who praised the game’s storyline, graphics and sound. It was the Call of Duty or Grand Theft Auto of its day.

And now it’s back as Myst Mobile. “This new port for iPhone and iPad is a fully reimagined version of the beloved classic that first released in 2021 for PC and console and is coming to mobile just in time to celebrate the game’s 30th anniversary,” said Cyan in a statement.

Myst Mobile can now be found on the App Store, and runs on both iPhone and iPad. It lets players explore the entirety of Myst Island for free, without a time limit. Those who want to go further can unlock the other Ages of Myst with a one-time in-app purchase of $9.99.

As Cyan noted, Myst was re-released for Mac and Windows in 2021, and was named Apple’s Game of the Year.
