iPhone shipments grew in the July-through-September period compared to the same quarter of 2021. The increase was modest, but still put Apple on a different trajectory from other handset makers.
Shipments of iOS devices went up 1.6% while its biggest rivals all dropped, some quite significantly.
iPhone shipments improved during Q3 2022
Apple announced Thursday that Q3 revenue from iPhone sales increased 10% year-over-year. But it didn’t reveal how many units it shipped. It’s up to market analysis firms to estimate that figure. Their estimates don’t completely line up, but all agree that shipments increased.
IDC says Apple’s handset shipments totaled 51.9 million during the September quarter, a 1.6% increase. Counterpoint Research says the iPhone total was 48.8 million, a 2% increase.
Not a good quarter for Android
Across the board, top Android-makers saw their shipments drop in Q3. Apple’s arch-rival Samsung’s shipments went down 7.8%, according to IDC. Xiaomi handset shipments declined 8.6%, Vivo’s went down 22.1% and Oppo’s dropped 22.3%.
“While Apple is the only vendor to deliver positive growth this quarter, it still faced challenges as its growth was stunted in many markets, including China, due to the poor macroeconomic situation,” said Nabila Popal, research director with IDC.
Android-makers experiencing shipment declines in China. Despite the difficulties, iPhone shipments grew 2.5% in that country, according to IDC.
Looking ahead, Jan Stryjak from Counterpoint noted, “With the full force of the latest iPhone launch being felt in Q4, we expect further quarterly improvement in the coming quarter, although central banks’ attempts to control inflation will further reduce consumer demand.”
