Rodolfo Castro of the Pittsburg Pirates made an epic slide into third base Wednesday. His iPhone also tagged third – we know because the handset flew out of his pocket and hit the base.
The umpire had to point out to the baseball player that that the iPhone was lying on the field.
Why baseball players shouldn’t carry their iPhone to third base
Castro was playing in the Pirates’ 6-4 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday when his handset made the news. The fact a camera clearly captured the iPhone flying out of his pocket helped the slip up go viral.

The little mishap brought out some some good jokes. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said, “Pirates lose game, Rodolfo Castro loses phone” and “The more pessimistic Pirates fans in Pittsburgh might argue the team phoned it in a while ago this season.”
And Fox Sports: MLB quipped, “Rodolfo Castro was safe at third, his phone was not.”
As funny as this all was, the second baseman could be in trouble because baseball players are prohibited from having electronic devices on the field.
Still, the incident definitely deserves mention on Friday Night Baseball on Apple TV+. Castro may be in hot water with MLB but he’s likely a hero in Cupertino. He’s clearly carrying an iPhone Pro – the triple-lens camera can’t be mistaken.
