Surely you already know that the newly redesigned MacBook Air is super thin. But you might not have realized just how  very sleek it is. It’s actually slimmer than the original iPhone.

In fact, the macOS laptop is much, much thinner than a lot of other classic and recent Apple devices.

2007 iPhone was thicker than the 2022 MacBook Air

The wraps came off the 2022 MacBook Air at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, and it’s both powerful and sleek. Most notably, it’s one of the first with the M2 processor. And all its capabilities fit into a chassis that’s a mere 0.44 inches thick.

As a clear demonstration of how much progress has been made in electronics over the last 15 years, the 2007 iPhone was 0.46 inches thick. You read that right: Apple’s newest MacBook is thinner than its original handset.

Remember when Steve Jobs pulled the first-generation MacBook Air out of an envelope to demonstrate how slim it was? That device was 0.76 inches thick, so the latest and greatest model is 42% slimmer than that.

Or consider the first iPod. The version that debuted in 2001 was 0.78 inches thick. That makes it almost double the thickness of the new MacBook.

To go even father back, the PowerBook 180c was very successful in 1993. It was speedy for its day, and had a nice color display. But it was a whopping 2.25 inches thick – more than 5 times thicker than the latest MacBook Air.

In MacBooks, size matters

It’s 30% slimmer than the the M1 MacBook Air. At its thickest, that device is a relatively chunky 0.63 inches, True, it uses a wedge design so the front is a mere 0.16 inches, making the whole computer seem slimmer than it is. But the latest MacBook Air doesn’t need trickery – it’s slim all over.

It’s not surprising that that the new 13-inch MacBook Air is slimmer than the 13-inch MacBook Pro. That comes with the “Air” descriptor. To get specific, the MBP is 0.61 inches thick, making the new Air 28% thinner.

The 2022 MacBook Air is proof that good things come in small packages. It’ll go up for preorder in July with a price starting at $1199.
