Well, that's no surprise.

LG’s popular UltraFine 5K monitor has been banished from the Apple Store following the launch of Apple’s own Studio Display. Both products offer very similar specifications, but LG’s — which isn’t quite as bright — is cheaper.

Apple is still selling the 23.7-inch LG UltraFine 4K display, which is a considerably more affordable alternative to the 27-inch options at under $700.

Apple starts snubbing LG displays

Apple added LG’s monitors to its store in 2019, almost three years after it discontinued its own Thunderbolt Display with no replacement. They were heavily endorsed, appearing in Cupertino’s marketing images and retail stores.

But Apple doesn’t need to push the UltraFine 5K now that its new Studio Display, which also features a 27-inch panel, is on sale. So, in a move that will surprise no one, the UltraFine 5K has been removed from the Apple Store.

Studio Display replaces LG UltraFine 5K

It doesn’t make sense for Apple to offer LG’s larger UltraFine monitor anymore. In addition to being the same size, both displays offer similar specifications, with 5120×2880 resolutions and support for the P3 color gamut.

Both screens also pack three USB-C ports, one Thunderbolt 3 port, and built-in webcams and speakers. However, the Studio Display’s extras are more impressive, and it is brighter at 600 nits (versus the UltraFine 5K’s 500 nits).

In case you hadn’t noticed, the Studio Display is also a lot prettier, with an all-aluminum design that looks right at home alongside any Mac, unlike the UltraFine. Yes, it’s $300 more expensive at $1,599, but that seems justified.

Apple no longer sells LG UltraFine 5K

So, it’s no longer possible to order the UltraFine 5K through Apple’s website, and it’s unlikely you’ll find one at your local Apple Store. The monitor is still available from LG, though it is currently out of stock with no return date.

There’s no indication LG itself has killed the UltraFine 5K. That seems unlikely given how popular the monitor has become since its debut. The $699 UltraFine 4K is still alive and kicking — and still available from Apple (for now).
