iPhone 14 Pro could pack strange ‘hole + pill’ screen cutout to replace notch

iPhone 14 Pro will feature a strange “hole + pill design” for its front-facing camera and Face ID sensors rather than a notch, according to an analyst.

It was previously believed that Apple would use a hole punch cutout, like a lot of rival smartphone makers. Then that changed to a pill-shaped camera cutout. Now, one analyst, who has proven reliable in the past, says we should expect both.

iPhone 14 Pro will have a hole and a pill

“We now believe Apple will have a hole + pill design on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models,” tweeted Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, on Wednesday. “The smaller hole will not be invisible.”

“The two hole concept will be unique to Apple, like the notch, not similar to all the pill models from Huawei,” Young added. He also included a photo, first shared by an anonymous Twitter tipster last September, that shows what is believed to be an iPhone 14 Pro cover glass with both cutouts.

Oh, Apple

Such a design is unlikely to go down well with a lot of iPhone fans. Although many didn’t like the notch when that debuted with iPhone X, at least it was symmetrical. A hole and a pill-shaped cutout just seems … odd.

While it may be unreasonable to think that iPhone could use a single hole like its rivals — given that Apple’s device packs a bunch of Face ID sensors other smartphones don’t have — surely Apple could come up with a better solution.

Fortunately, rumors indicate the more-affordable iPhone 14 models will stick with the familiar notch. Here’s to hoping Apple finds a way to eliminate notches and cutouts entirely before that changes.

We would usually tell you to take strange claims like these with a pinch of salt. And while that’s still a good idea, Young has a 100% reliable track record when it comes to predicting Apple moves, according to AppleTrack.
