Eve Systems said Tuesday its third-generation Eve Room air quality monitor for HomeKit now supports the Thread home automation connectivity standard. That should improve its responsiveness over HomeKit and Wi-Fi.

This newest version of Eve Room retains the functionality and design of its predecessor. Its diminutive, 2.1-inch by 2.1-inch body has an anodized exterior frame and contains a 200 x 200 pixel e-ink display.

Eve Room functions

Eve Room measures your home’s temperature, humidity and levels of volatile organic compounds (VOC). It works exclusively with Apple HomeKit. It now communicates over Thread when available but falls back to Bluetooth when necessary. Eve said the device’s built-in battery lasts six weeks on a single charge over micro USB.

“Thread has been a spectacular success for us, and in a not-too-distant future a Thread network in your house will be just as common as Wi-Fi”, says Jerome Gackel, CEO of Eve Systems. “If you purchase an Eve product with Thread, like Eve Room, you’re making a sustainable, future-proof choice, as Thread is one of the natively supported standards in Matter, the common protocol backed by Apple, Google, Amazon, SmartThings/Samsung, Eve and many more.

Key features

  • Track VOC concentration, temperature and humidity levels.
  • Detect harmful VOC levels and send alerts over the Eve app and the Home app.
  • Track the readings on the high-contrast e-ink display or your iPhone in the Eve app or the Home app.
  • Joins your Thread network automatically / supports Bluetooth and Thread.
  • Needs no bridge or gateway.

Eve and Thread support

Eve Room joins several other Eve products in adopting the Thread standard. They include Eve Energy, Eve Door & Window and the Eve Aqua.

Thread is a new smart home connectivity standard that establishes a low-power, self-healing and battery-efficient mesh network among home automation products. Apple supports Thread with its HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K.
