A new survey of more than 5,000 iPhone owners in the United States found that a whopping 64.1% believe the iPhone 13 refresh is “not very” or “not at all” exciting. Just 23.3% intend to upgrade this year.

While fans are happy to see upgrades like ProMotion and longer battery life, others bemoan the lack of Touch ID and always-on display. Others simply don’t feel like iPhone 13 is enough of an upgrade over their current device.

Apple fans underwhelmed by iPhone 13

The survey carried out by SellCell asked existing iPhone owners what they thought of the iPhone 13 lineup. Of the more than 5,000 respondents, just 14.4% called it “extremely” or “very” exciting.

More than two in 10 respondents (21.5%) said the refresh was “somewhat” exciting, while a staggering 64.1% called it “not very” or “not at all exciting.” 76.8% of people said they don’t intend to upgrade their iPhone this year.

When SellCell carried out a similar survey a few months ago before Apple made the iPhone 13 lineup official, 43.7% of respondents said they planned to upgrade this year. That figure has now dropped by 20.5%.

Those who are upgrading seem to be favoring iPhone 13 Pro or Pro Max over their siblings. Just 22% of people said they planned to buy a regular iPhone 13, while a mere 9.2% said they are eyeing up an iPhone 13 mini.

iPhone fans want more

Despite being an incremental upgrade, this year’s iPhone refresh brings some big improvements, including better cameras, longer battery life, and perhaps most importantly, a super-smooth ProMotion display.

But for some iPhone fans, that’s not enough. 29.3% of respondents said the lack of Touch ID was a deal-breaker for iPhone 13, while 19.5% said the the lineup lacks other “major features” that may have warranted an upgrade.

Fortunately for Apple, just 16.1% of those who said they won’t buy an iPhone 13 are planning to switch to Android. The majority said they will wait for iPhone 14, while 11.3% plan to buy an older iPhone model instead.
