New macOS Monterey beta hints at ‘High Power Mode’ for MacBook

Apple is working on a new “High Power Mode” that could boost MacBook performance when the device isn’t connected to a power source, according to the latest macOS Monterey beta.

The feature is thought to be similar to the “Pro Mode” that was first spotted in a macOS Catalina beta early last year. Pro Mode never made its public debut, but it seems Cupertino hasn’t given up on the idea.

High Power Mode on its way to MacBook?

Your MacBook already delivers the best possible performance when connected to a power adapter. But when it’s running off its battery, its system resources are pegged back a little in an effort to maximize battery life.

It seems, however, that High Power Mode could give users the option to override that measure and take full advantage of their processor and RAM performance when they really need to — at the expense of battery life.

macOS Monterey already includes a Low Power Mode that reduces performance, decreases display brightness, and disables certain features to conserve battery life. High Power Mode would do they exact opposite.

Little more than a line of code

But it’s still unclear for now whether this feature will ever make its way to a public macOS release. As things stand, High Power Mode is only referred to in the code for the latest macOS Monterey beta, which rolled out on Tuesday.

What’s also unclear is whether High Power Mode would be available on all portable Mac models, or whether it would be exclusive to certain machines — like MacBook Pro or future Apple Silicon devices.
