‘Otherworldly’ images, step by step
She begins by taking night images by looking for light sources. “The first element of photography for me is finding light,” said Lax. “So find light sources that look good, have interesting color… whatever light is calling your name, going towards that light.”
And don’t overthink your pictures. “The second thing is to experiment with something that can make it really unique,” the photog recommends. “I like putting stuff in front of the lens and just seeing what happens.” In the video, she uses thin plastic films, sometimes with vaseline on them.
In the third strep, she goes over editing the images. She doesn’t use a pricy application — she does her editing for the tutorial with the iPhone’s Photos app. Lax shows some of the benefits of the Rotate, Crop, Contrast, Saturation and Vignette tools.
“Everybody can be creative,” says Lax. “Just go out there and you’ll get amazing stuff. And you’ll get better at it as you go.”
Apple encourages iPhone photographers with occasional tutorials like this one. Before this was an eye-opening demonstration of the capabilities of the cameras built into Apple handsets.
