Screen legend Tom Hanks will reportedly soon star in a second Apple TV+ movie. Finch will be the story of a man, a robot and a dog.
It follows Hanks’ Oscar-nominated Greyhound, which ended up on Apple’s streaming video service last summer when the pandemic closed theaters.
Finch isn’t your typical family drama
Hanks will play the title character, a robotics engineer who’s one of the few survivors of a cataclysm, according to Deadline. When Finch realizes his dog is going to outlive him, he builds a robot to care for his beloved pet. He then tries to show his creation the joy of being alive.
The movie is being produced by Stephen Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment .The script for Finch is by Craig Luck and Ivor Powell. Powell has experience in this genre — he was an associate producer for the sci-if classics Blade Runner and Alien.
How much Apple paid for the rights is unknown, but there was “a very competitive weekend auction” according to Deadline.
The film is reportedly scheduled to be released on Apple TV+ later in 2021. And it may run in theaters, too.

The World War II naval epic Greyhound was the first collaboration between Hanks and Apple. It pulled in a significant audience, and generally positive reviews But that was just the start.
Hanks is one of the producers for Masters of the Air, a followup to HBO’s mega-hit Band of Brothers. This is in production and will eventually air on Apple TV+.
And now the actor will star in Finch on Apple’s service. It will join an array of other offerings, including thrillers, crime dramas, comedies and documentaries. The streaming service costs $4.99 a month but also forms a key component of all Apple One subscription bundles.
