Eye-popping iPhone Fold concept opens into an iPad

Imagine a folding iPhone as if a regular iPhone and an iPad had a baby.

A concept artist brought to beautiful life the folding iPhone they hope Apple is creating. The device starts with a standard iOS handset design but then opens into an iPad.

Watch the concept video now, and get ready to wipe the drool off your chin.

The iPhone Fold concept video is by Svyatoslav Alexandrov for ConceptsiPhone. The video portrays one of the two most-popular possibilities for a folding iPhone: a handset that open into a tablet. In this case, it’s an iPhone with a 6.3-inch display and an 8-inch inner screen.

The other popular option is a half-size handset that unfolds into a regular-size one. This second alternative is the direction Apple is going, according to a recent unconfirmed report.

Beyond the hinge, Alexandrov imagines some other enhancements for the iPhone Fold concept, some of which might come true in the near future. The 2020 iOS handset really might come with a smaller notch and in-screen Touch ID. And an Apple A15 Bionic processor is almost certain.

But other concept features are only hopes, like four speakers and a battery capable of 30 hours of video playback on a single charge.

Folding iPhone seemingly in development

While there’s no clear proof Apple plans a folding iPhone, the company undeniably keeps looking into building such a device. For years, Apple engineers have been getting patents related to hinges, screens and other aspects of flexible handsets. Just in 2020, we saw work on hinge designs and bendable batteries, too.

Samsung, Motorola and others already released foldable phones. In general, these have been very expensive, niche offerings. That’s not a product strategy Apple ever uses with iPhones. Instead, it waits until the hardware and software is ready to make a popular, mainstream device.
