Apple has begun shipping iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro preorders ahead of Friday’s launch. Many customers — though not all — can now track their shipments through UPS.

That doesn’t mean you can expect to receive your new handset early, however.

iPhone 12 and 12 Pro make their official debuts on Friday, October 23. They will be the first of four devices launching this fall, with preorders for iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max scheduled for November 6.

Many preorder customers will find this morning that their new smartphone is still “preparing to ship,” but it’s possible for some to now track their shipments through the UPS website.

Apple won’t provide tracking information until later this week — closer to the official launch date. But there are a couple of tricks you can use to find out the status of your order if it’s now in the hands of UPS.

One method is to sign up (if you haven’t already) for UPS My Choice, which notifies you as soon as a parcel is headed to your address. Another is to enter your tracking number on the UPS website.

Your tracking number will be either the phone number listed on your order, or your Apple order number minus the last two digits.

Note, however, that not all shipments have been handed over to UPS yet. If you can’t see tracking information right now, check back again later.

No early arrivals

It might seem like Apple is shipping the first iPhone 12 and 12 Pro orders a little early, but you shouldn’t expect to receive yours before Friday — even if tracking information tells you it will arrive earlier.

Apple works closely with partners like UPS to ensure that new devices don’t get delivered before their official launch dates. Although a few units have slipped through the net in previous years, it’s very rare.
