Fortnite developer Epic Games has warned iPhone and iPad users that they could lose access to its hit battle royale game when updating to iOS 14. But there is a way to ensure that doesn’t happen.

We’ll show you how before you start installing the latest update.

Fortnite is no longer available to download from the App Store thanks to an ongoing dispute between Apple and Epic Games. Even if you’ve played the game before, there’s no way to re-download it.

You can continue to play the game if you already have Fortnite installed on your iPhone and iPad. But if you’re not careful, updating to iOS 14 or iPadOS 14 could remove the game for good.

Here’s how to prevent that from happening.

How to keep Fortnite when updating to iOS 14

The likelihood of you losing Fortnite when you update all depends on how much free storage you have. If you’re running low, your iPhone or iPad might want to remove apps to make space for the download.

Look out for a message that asks, “Temporarily Remove Apps to Install the Software Update?” If you see this, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Tap Cancel.
  2. Open the Settings app.
  3. Tap General, then tap iPhone Storage or iPad Storage.
  4. Manually remove any apps, games, or other media you no longer use until you have freed up enough storage space. iOS 14 can weigh in at up to 5GB, depending on your device.
  5. Tap General to go back, then tap Software Update.
  6. Attempt to install iOS 14 or iPadOS 14 again.

It’s very important that you make sure you tap Cancel when asked if you want to temporarily remove apps to free up space. If you don’t tap cancel, Fortnite could be removed, and then it’s gone for good.
