Almost a year ago, Microsoft promised to add Split View to its Office for iPad suite of applications. The feature is available now, at long last. This allows users to work with two Word or Powerpoint documents side-by-side.

Update: Excel does not yet support this feature.

Big Microsoft Word and Powerpoint upgrade

A highlight of iPadOS 13 is the ability to open two copies of the same application next to each other, each in its own window. Apple demonstrated this at WWDC 2019 by showing two Word documents on an iPad display.

But it took this long for the feature to actually appear in Office for iPad. Microsoft might be a bit sheepish about the delay because the “What’s New” listings for Word Powerpoint make no mention of this feature, but tests by Cult of Mac show it’s there.

Update: It’s not yet known when Excel will also get this feature. Perhaps Microsoft is holding off an announcement until all three Office applications have full support for Split View.

The long wait is especially egregious considering full support for Split View was added to Apple’s iWork suite in September 2019.

Going all in for Microsoft Office for iPad

This significant enhancement comes just a few days after it leaked out that Microsoft plans to add trackpad/mouse functionality to Office for iPad by autumn 2020.

Word, Excel and Powerpoint are all available for Apple’s tablet. But for most iPad models, using them requires a Microsoft 365 Personal subscription at either $69.99 per year or $6.99 a month.
