Sources in Apple’s supply chain reportedly indicate that that the next AirPods Pro won‘t be out until later this year, or perhaps 2021. This contradicts other reports that the company could introduce new wireless earbuds as early as next month.

DigiTimes, which has a slightly shaky history of correctly predicting Apple’s future plans, said Monday that “Apple is likely to defer the launch of its new AirPods Pro to the second half of 2020 or even 2021, according to sources at related suppliers.”

AirPods rumors in a muddle

This report is apparently referring to the mid-level version of Apple’s AirPods Pro that the Taiwan-based website has been talking about for months, not a replacement for the high-end hearables Apple introduced in December 2019. DigiTimes predicted in early March that the “Lite” version will be out in before the end of April. That’s seemingly changed.

However, there are other sources claiming to have the inside scoop on these miniature headphones. Frequent Apple leaker Jon Prosser said yesterday that new AirPods are “probably” coming next month.

At this point, it’s not clear if which of these two sources is right. Or even whether they’re talking about the same device.

Earlier DigiTimes reports talked about AirPods Pro Lite, which would apparently be wireless earbuds with the same design as AirPods Pro including removable silicone tips, but with a stripped-down feature set. That would differentiate them from the current basic AirPods, which have a simpler design. Those were last updated a year ago.

Prosser previously said Apple is working on new over-ear headphones and AirPods X for runners for release later this year.
