Fortnite just got its first update of 2020, and while it may look like a small and insignificant release at first glance, it actually makes playing on iOS devices better than ever.

The version 11.40 update finally adds support for L3 and R3 buttons on compatible controllers. And those playing on iPad Pro can now enjoy super-speedy gameplay at up to 120 frames-per-second.

We’re currently in the midst of the longest season in Fortnite history. Chapter 2 kicked off in the middle of October last year, and its second season isn’t scheduled until February. A season usually lasts for just 10 weeks.

On top of that, smaller patches were halted over the holiday period, leaving fans with no changes to look forward to. The 11.40 update is Fortnite’s first of 2020, but boy was it worth the wait.

Fortnite is buttery-smooth on iPad

Today’s release makes two massive improvements for mobile players. The first is full controller support, with the ability to use clickable analog sticks (usually referred to as L3 and R3 buttons) on controllers that have them.

This includes PlayStation 4 and Xbox One controllers, which have been compatible with iPhone and iPad since the release of iOS 13 last fall.

An even bigger improvement for those with a 2018 iPad Pro is the ability to play at a buttery-smooth 120Hz. This takes full advantage of Apple’s ProMotion display technology for the first time.

To put this into context, you would usually need a fairly pricey gaming PC (and a pricey monitor) to enjoy 120Hz. That’s double the refresh rate you’ll get in Fortnite on PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X.

Other changes in version 11.40

Fortnite’s newest update also brings the ability to “sidegrade” (rather than upgrade) weapons. You can only do this with assault rifles for now. It also reduces the amount of materials you’ll need to upgrade.

The complete list of changes and fixes can be found on the official Fortnite blog.
