CES 2020It’s easy to mock smart toothbrushes, but most people don’t have very good dental hygiene. High-tech solutions like Colgate’s Plaqless Pro or Oral-B iO might be able to help by giving users feedback with an iPhone application.

Both toothbrushes were honored at CES 2020, with Colgate’s even earning the Best of Innovation award for Health and Beauty.

Oral-B iO sports a redesigned brush

A linear magnetic drive is at the center of the Oral-B iO, providing oscillating, rotating movements with micro-vibrations to the brush. This brush head has been redesigned with twisted bristles.

An Oral-B iO app communicates with the brush over Bluetooth. It provides tracking and coaching, and even offers 3D teeth tracking.

“Six years of dedicated research were undertaken with dental professionals to discover a wholly original brushing experience,” said Lisa Ernst, P&G VP Global Health Care R&D.

Colgate Plaqless Pro is a very smart toothbrush

Colgate‘s smart toothbrush boasts optic sensor technology to detect biofilm buildup so that it can be removed while brushing. It lets users see when they need to brush longer in one area.

The Plaqless Pro communicates with the Colgate Connect app to show users a map of their mouth to show where they brushed their teeth and if they missed a spot.

“Our new Plaqless Pro delivers the superior cleaning of a powered toothbrush, the proven location tracking of advanced oral care devices and now the detection of an oral scanner that enables personal brushing feedback in real time for remarkable clean,” said Patricia Verduin, Chief Technology Officer for Colgate-Palmolive.

Both these smart toothbrushes were unveiled at CES 2020, but neither is ready for release yet. The Oral-B iO won‘t be out until September, and Colgate is just saying its product will debut this year. Pricing is equally a mystery.
