The iPhone’s Portrait mode lets users add effects that emulate studio lighting. Soon, the iPhone could allow for the real thing.

Apple has added support for strobes as a preview for developers in its Made-for-iPhone licensing program.

The specs, according to 9to5 Mac, would allow third-party strobes to sync with the iPhone’s integrated flash or with Lightning plug-in accessories such as trigger or battery case.

Apple is providing strobe support specs to manufacturers so that they can plan and develop licensed MFi products. The strobe support would only extend to the iPhone 11 series, 9to5 Mac reported.

Mobile photographers can add extra lighting to their iPhone photos via Bluetooth-enabled accessories, like Lume Cube or the Profoto C1 lights. Lume Cube features a sensor that activates a flash when it detects the iPhone flash firing. The Profoto light is triggered through an app.
