An update to Google’s Waze navigation app lets users warn other drivers about snow-covered roads that have yet to be plowed.
This feature is already available in both the iOS and Android versions.
Reporting unplowed roads in Waze
Enabling Waze users to alert other drivers about unpaved roads was a recommendation from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).
Users will be notified of unplowed areas like they are any other road hazard, like construction, with an on-screen icon. They won‘t be automatically routed around this condition, as they would be for closed roads.
Of course, for notifications like this to appear, other Waze users need to tell this application about unplowed roads. But the community of Wazers has a long history of providing other drivers with cloud-sourced warnings about accidents, traffic slowdowns and speed traps.
To notify another driver of an unplowed road, go to Reports > Hazard > Weather. The option appears next to warnings for Fog, Ice, Hail, etc. But don’t do this while driving!
A Cult of Mac test showed that unplowed road notifications are already built into the iOS version of Waze.
