Apple’s townsquare-style store at Scottsdale Fashion Square in Arizona nabbed the best of design award for retail and mixed-use space from The Architect’s Newspaper.

The Scottsdale Apple store beat out a Christian Dior store in Chicago’s high fashion shopping district and a retail center in Springfield, Missouri. Boasting design features like a cantilevered roof for shading, the store looks unlike most other Apple stores you usually see.

As a Phoenix resident and frequent shopper at Fashion Square, I’ve got to say the Apple store there is one of the best I’ve ever come across. Before Apple moved into the location the mall was very inward-focused, even though the best walkable shopping area in the Phoenix metro area is just down the street. Apple’s mixed-use space makes the mall feel more open with the multi-level amphitheater and shaded area that is crucial for our brutal summers.

Here’s what the editors of AN had to say about the store:

“Arizona’s harsh desert environment called for a distinctive approach to shading Apple’s iconic glazing system. The interior ceiling extends to act as an exterior shading device, establishing visual connections and blurring the distinction between indoors and outdoors. Engineered to cantilever a remarkable distance from the building facade, the sunshade exhibits structural slenderness. This simple and elegant canopy, in combination with the low height of the store, results in a building that is both iconic and humble.”

The new store replaced the Apple store at the Biltmore shopping center which had outgrown its small retail space years ago. Apple also has a pretty awesome looking store at the Scottsdale Quarter
