Gamers using the Steam Link app on iOS can now enjoy multiplayer games with friends who use a PC.

Valve’s new Remote Play Together feature, announced last month, is already out of beta and available to all. And it works across Windows, macOS, and Linux — as well as Android and iOS.

Remote Play Together gives gamers the ability to join each other in local multiplayer games that would usually require both players to be sitting right next to each other.

It works over the internet (obviously), and now that it’s out of beta, it supports mobile devices, too. Here’s how it works.

Steam Link adds remote multiplayer

The person playing on PC — the host — simply starts a game, then invites another player to join through Steam. Only the host has to actually own the game, so two copies aren’t required.

Those on iPhone or iPad can join the multiplayer session through the Steam Link app, which is a free download. They can use Steam Chat, also free, to talk to the host while they play.

Performance is likely to depend on the connections of both parties. The feature worked well in a promotional stream hosted by Valve. But The Verge reports it struggled to get things working.

Your mileage may vary, then. Nevertheless, Remote Play Together gives Steam a nice advantage over rival game streaming services.

A Steam sale to celebrate

Steam is hosting a big sale on multiplayer games to celebrate the launch of Remote Play Together. It runs through November 25 and has some terrific titles on offer. Highlights include:

  • Goat Simulator — 75% off
  • Overcooked — 75% off
  • Spelunky — 85% off
  • Guacamelee! — 80% off
  • A Hat in Time — 50% off
  • Enter the Gungeon — 50% off

Remote Play Together drops at an ideal time with the holidays right around the corner. Even if you don’t get a chance to see friends in person, at least you’ll be able to play with them.
