Ford today confirmed it is bringing wireless CarPlay to select 2020 vehicles. It will be integrated the auto giant’s new SYNC 4 infotainment system with support for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

CarPlay adoption has been slow but steady since the platform’s introduction in 2014. Most of the major manufacturers now support, and some have recently started doing away with wires.

BMW was the first to add wireless CarPlay support. Head unit brands like Alpine, JVC, Kenwood, and Pioneer also offer devices that allow wireless CarPlay to be retrofitted to existing cars.

Ford is joining the party next year.

Ford adds wireless CarPlay support

Certain Ford vehicles will ship with wireless CarPlay support in 2020 as part of its new SYNC 4 system, which will also be capable of receiving over-the-air software updates.

You’ll be able to connect your iPhone over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to enjoy CarPlay functionality. Wired support will still be baked in for those who prefer the reliability of a Lightning cable.

“SYNC has always featured the best of Ford innovation to help our customers stay connected to and manage their busy lives as they move about the world,” said Hau Thai-Tang, Ford chief product development & purchasing officer.

“With this new fourth-generation technology, we’ve evolved SYNC into an intelligent, voice-activated, in-vehicle digital assistant.”

There’s Android Auto, too

CarPlay works exactly the same no matter how you connect your iPhone. You’ll still be able to access messages, calls, and Maps, and use third-party apps like WhatsApp, Pandora, and more.

Ford says its SYNC 4 system will also support wireless Android Auto. It’s not yet clear which vehicles will ship with the system as standard, but almost all should offer it as an optional upgrade.
