Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam has landed the lead role in the highly-anticipated adaption of Shantaram heading to Apple TV+ next year. Shantaram is scheduled to start filming in October. It will be the first international project for Apple TV+ with locations set in Australia and India.

Hunnam hasn’t been in a TV series since Sons of Anarchy made him a star. He went on to appear in blockbuster movies like Pacific Rim and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. He also co-starred with Elijah Wood in Green Street Hooligans which is probably the best soccer football movie you haven’t watched.

Apple greenlit the 10-episode Shantaram series this summer and is moving quickly on production. Eric Warren Singer, who won an Oscar for the American Hustle screenplay, was tapped to adapt the novel written by Gregory David Roberts. The original novel sold six million copies and was published in 39 languages in 42 territories worldwide.

Shantaram follows the story of Lin (Hunnam), an Aussie bank robber who escapes the prison and flees to India. He eventually gets lost in the underworld of Mumbai where he finds a new life. The series will have plenty of suspenseful action, gorgeous cinematography and plenty of thought-provoking plot lines.

In other casting news for the project, Richard Roxburgh will play Detective Sergeant Marty Nightingalem who works for the agency pursuing Lin. Radhika Ante will play Kavita, a driven Indian journalist looking for answers.

The first two and last two episodes will be directed by Australian movie director Justin Kurzel (Snowtown, Macbeth) Anonymous Content and Paramount Television will produce the series which probably won’t hit Apple TV+ until later in 2020.
