To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the original Doom, Bethesda Softworks relaunched Doom II for iPhone and iPad. It promises “more demons, more weapons, more action” — just like it did back in 1994.
For good or ill, id Software’s original version of this title helped launch the first-person shooter games category back in 1993. And this rereleased edition for iPhone and iPad is a straight-up port of Doom II, not a reimagining. The game looks just like it did back in the day, pixelated monsters and all. Still, it should make Gen X feel nostalgic.
For anyone who skipped the 1990s, Bethesda says of Doom II: “To save Earth, you must descend into the depths of hell, survive demon hordes, and take part in the fiercest battle ever.”
To interest people who played this game endlessly, Bethesda built 20 additional levels into the iOS version. It also offers four-player local cooperative play. Or battle against four other players.
Doom II for iOS is available now on the App Store for $4.99.
