Aspyr has confirmed plans to ditch its entire catalog of 32-bit games developed for Mac.

The news comes just a few weeks after Apple announced macOS Catalina — the first version of its operating system that won’t support 32-bit apps. A number of big titles will get the boot, including Call of Duty, Civilization, and Sims.

If you plan to upgrade to Catalina this fall, then you won’t be able to play Aspyr’s 32-bit games anyway. If you stick with Mojave, they will continue to work — you just won’t be able to buy any more 32-bit titles after today.

Lots of Aspyr titles already support 64-bit architectures, and many more will be updated with 64-bit support by September. But lots of notable releases — particularly older titles — will not.

Aspyr moves away from 32-bit games

“Once Apple announced it was discontinuing support for 32-bit titles, we decided ending sales for those games was the right thing to do, and well before Apple’s support ends later this year,” said Aspyr vice president of publishing Elizabeth Howard.

The decision certainly makes sense. It would be disappointing for Mac users to buy 32-bit games in August only to find out they cannot play them when they upgrade in September. There’s plenty of 64-bit titles to choose from instead, and Aspyr says it has more up its sleeve for later on.

“Giving players fun, innovative games across all platforms is our focus, and we have some exciting new projects that we will reveal very soon.”

Games that will get the boot

Sadly, some of Aspyr’s games won’t see 64-bit updates, so they will no longer be sold. The full list of titles getting the boot today is:

  • Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel
  • Call of Duty
  • Call of Duty 2
  • Call of Duty 4
  • Call of Duty Black Ops
  • Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2
  • Civilization IV
  • Civilization IV: Colonization
  • Doom 3
  • Duke Nukem Forever
  • Fahrenheit
  • Homeworld Remastered Collection
  • Prey
  • Quake 4
  • RAGE
  • Star Wars: Empire at War
  • Star Wars: Jedi Academy
  • Star Wars: Jedi Outcast
  • Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
  • Sims 2: Life Stories
  • Sims 2: Pet Stories
  • Sims 2: Castaway Stories
  • Tomb Raider 2

If you have no plans to upgrade to Catalina and you want any of these games, you have until the end of today to buy them.

Anything purchased from the App Store will continue to be available from your Purchased list. The same goes for those who purchase Aspyr games from Steam.
