Apple Stores start selling new 23.7-inch LG UltraFine Display

By

Apple Stores have quietly started selling LG’s new 23.7-inch UltraFine Display.

Priced at $699, the same as the 21-inch 4K UltraFine Display, the new model sports a similar design and offers a 4K TFT panel. It also packs two Thunderbolt 3 ports and two USB ports.

LG’s UltraFine Displays started disappearing from Apple Stores over the last few months. This led fans to believe that Apple had stopped pushing the screens ahead of the release of its own display, rumored to be coming later this year.

But some Apple Store shoppers have spotted new UltraFine monitors are now on sale.

TidBITS writer Julio Ojeda-Zapata picked up one of the new screens during a trip to the Apple Store last week. He had planned to purchase the 21.5-inch model, but an Apple employee told him to avoid it.

Why? “Because we have a larger LG display for the same price,” Ojeda-Zapata was told before being shown the new 23.7-inch model. Ojeda-Zapata later confirmed the same display was also available at another location nearby.

Strangely, LG’s new display isn’t available to purchase elsewhere. And when you Google its model number (24MD4KL), you’ll find little more than an FCC listing and an Energy Star certificate.

LG’s new UltraFine isn’t too spectacular

TidBITS reports that the resolution of LG’s new screen is 3360×1890, which isn’t even 4K — but that seems unlikely for a $700 monitor. A user manual for the display suggests it is actually 3840×2160 (at 60Hz), which is 4K.

Taking its larger size into account, that means you get fewer pixels-per-inch than with the older 21-inch UltraFine Display. But it would still qualify as a Retina display and should still be sharp enough for most desktop users.

The new UltraFine uses a TFT screen and an adjustable stand. It has two Thunderbolt 3 connectors, allowing you to connect your Mac and another peripheral, and three USB ports for other accessories.

Want one? You should be able to find one in your local Apple Store, though it might be best to check before making your way there. You won’t find them on the Apple Online Store yet, so you’ll need to speak to a retail employee.
