The iPhone 6s is still alive and well in some markets — one of which is India, where the 2015 flagship is now being manufactured.

Apple is using this to sell the handset to locals. India has become an increasingly important market for the company as smartphone growth in other areas slows to a crawl.

The iPhone 6s made its debut almost four years ago. Apple no longer sells it markets like the U.S. and Europe where its more recent flagships are more popular. But in countries where more affordable devices reign supreme, it’s ideal.

The device has become particularly important for Apple in India. Now that the handset is being manufactured locally, Apple is able to offer it to Indian customers at a more competitive rate.

Made in India

The iPhone 6s starts at 26,910 rupees, which is approximately $383. That’s still pretty pricey for India, but customers get a lot for their money — perhaps most importantly the latest version of iOS.

They get snappy performance and capable cameras, too, as well as features like a Retina display and Touch ID. The iPhone 6s also has a headphone jack, unlike more recent Apple handsets.

Apple’s efforts to manufacture devices in India was sparked by a “Made in India” initiative led by the government. This is the second handset to enter production locally, following the iPhone SE.

Selling old iPhones is easy for Apple

Keeping old iPhones around a reduced prices is the easiest way Apple can serve customers in emerging markets.

Other manufacturers, like Samsung, have budget brands and product lineups, but that has never been Apple’s style. It may be forced to go that route if older devices don’t have more of an impact in key markets like China, however.
