Apple has persuaded Amazon to bring its Prime Video service to Apple TV.
Prime subscribers will be able to enjoy the service later this year, Tim Cook told us during Apple’s WWDC keynote this morning. But there was no mention of tvOS 11.
Apple TV celebrated its tenth anniversary this year, and it has become an awesome addition to out living’s room over the past decade — especially after getting its own App Store in 2015. However, most would agree the device is yet to meet its full potential.
Apple TV still cannot replace our cable boxes completely, and sales have continued to decline in recent quarters. A lack of tvOS news at WWDC isn’t going to change that, but Apple will be hoping that Amazon Prime Video can.
Amazon hasn’t exactly been the Apple TV’s biggest fan; the retail giant stopped selling the device back in 2015 in an effort to boost sales of its own Fire TV and Fire TV Stick. But despite that, it won’t prevent Apple TV owners from enjoying Prime Video.
Apple hasn’t told us much about Prime Video support just yet. We’re assuming you’ll be able to stream content with your Prime subscription, and enjoy movies and TV shows you’ve already purchased — but it’s unlikely you’ll be able to buy fresh content from Amazon on tvOS.
We’ll find out more “later this year” when Prime Video lands on Apple TV. Apple has also promised more tvOS news later, but for now, it seems this is the only Apple TV update we’re getting from WWDC this year.
