If the new Apple TV running iOS 9 looks this gorgeous, take our money now

We know that the next Apple TV will be a radical, gaming focused overhaul of Apple’s streaming set-top box, but what will it actually look like? Wednesday will tell, but if it looks and feels anything like this iOS 9 overhauled concept by Andrew Ambrosino, we’ll be pretty happy indeed.

Ironically shown running on a Samsung slim bezeled TV, Ambrosino imagines the next Apple TV as having a home screen, complete with date, time, and configurable background.

It also takes some cues from watchOS with glances, allowing you to swipe left or right on the home screen to look at updates.

The new homescreen is very much inspired by what it looks like on iOS, complete with App Store. And inspired by iPad multi-tasking, Ambrosino imagines the new Apple TV having a picture-in-picture mode.

Here’s what Ambrosino thinks Siri will look like in coordination with Proactive and Universal Search.

I’ve got to admit, I like this vision of what the new Apple TV could look like a lot. It’s familiar, powerful, and classy… things I’ve never really thought about the current Apple TV interface.

What do you think? Let us know in the comments.

if there’s ONE thing i am CERTAIN they wont do is : demo apple tv output on a SAMSUNG TV!!! My bet is that they’ll use Sony.

ericsson is suing apple in europe over cellphone wireless technology. sony is a close partner of ericsson who sold their smartphone division to sony for $2 billlion.

Not sure who is left then :) Sounds like a case of who’s my enemy’s enemy.. rather like the Middle East!

currently Apple demos all their Apple TVs in the retail stores with Samsung televisions. they also hire samsung to build their displays

      • William D says:

True. Though i thought they had panasonic in store (though i’ve not looked for a while). I guess there arent that many players.

      • Joe Gera says:

Apple uses 40″ Sony televisions in all of their Apple stores to demo Apple TV. Originally they used pioneer kuro 42″ plasmas to demo the first generation. The current Sony tvs have been in use since pioneer stopped making tvs. Samsung isn’t used, but they do build apples processors for iOS devices, and some of their displays. Lg display and sharp build the rest.

Apple uses Sharp for 4K monitors

For text to be that crisp /slimline it’d have to be 4K.

On the Watch, the default screen isn’t a static photo with the time. It’s your watch face.

On the TV, the default screen isn’t going to be a static photo with the time. It’s going to be your TV.

That’s of course, assuming that it’ll support HDMI input/throughput like the Xbox One does. If not, it’ll be the apps screen, like on the current TV. (Why would they force the user into an extra gesture to unlock the device?)

    • Terry Johnson says:

Assuming its a multitouch remote, it would be to prevent unintended gestures/selections, the same reason they force the user to unlock their other touch devices?

  4. As long as they update the interface, I will be fine. Currently, it looks dated and stale. If they add translucency, similar to iOS 9 I will be very happy. I also hope they add Siri, and touch ID to the remote so you can use voice search and log in with different profiles.

Some of that looks like AndroidTV.

I just want something that charges a monthly fee to provide most any show or movie and create channels for me queuing up programs in slots. When I watch it it goes away. If I say later, another moves forward in the slot.

Netflix does a bad job because there is no way near as I can tell to mark a movie as watched and file it away so it isn’t sucking up space.

A pointless article. It reminds me of a “what if” TV “documentary” quasi positing on the difficulties involved building a transatlantic tunnel. Also pointless and without foundation. … most likely the result of a pub lunch discussion. Anyone can guess at what may be, but for it to become a serious discussion is vacuous.
And creating an article about another hack writer’s article is just lazy, unimaginative bollocks. I hope he isn’t paid for this rubbish.

This is not the new Apple TV and this is not iOS 9. It is, however, a pretty picture made by some guy/gal.

  9. David says:

Really do not care what it looks like as long as PXLW’s IRIS is inside. Be a nice 7 point hockey stick!!!

I’ve had AppleTV on a couple TVs for some time. I also have Netflix and amazon prime. Until there’s a way to see both an AppleTV, I simply won’t be interested in any “upgrades”. I’m tired of Apple (and others) taking too much liberty with how they control my user experience with their products.
I have bought 100’s of iPhones for my employees and my family, and apple does significant harm to my opinion of them by making 3rd party lightning cables not work on the the devices, not even to allow power to charge the batteries. (In case you don’t know, they have a chip in their connector and software on their devices to not let you use a 3rd-party unauthorized connector; you can defeat this by turning off your iPhone and charging your device, as then the software is not running).
I have similar issues with AppleTV. I WANT to like to use Apple products. Why isn’t it enough that I buy so many of their products, buy apps on their app store, and buy support for their services? Apple sees fit to use the USB standards on one end of these cables, imagine if everyone who makes a product that uses electricity had a different standard for connecting to power outlets, it would be a disaster.
Same thing with AppleTV, why shouldn’t we all be able to add apps to the device to use whatever services we want. Imagine if cell phone companies said you could only call people on their own or affiliated networks.
Apple and other companies will continue this kind of business practice until we, their customers, push back.

Great article. For those who live outside US like me, you can access Netflix, Hulu and similar media stations on your Apple TV by using UnoTelly or similar tools.
