Tidal adds family plans, still costs more than Apple Music

Jay Z’s music service, Tidal, is still trying to keep up with Apple Music, but instead of offering a new differentiating feature, the music streamer is playing catch up by coming out with Family plans of its own.

Tidal subscribers can now receive 50 percent off their monthly subscription when additional family members sign up for the service. Family plans are available for both subscribers of the $10 per month Premium plan, or the $20 per month HiFi streaming option.

Despite making Tidal cheaper for the masses, Apple Music is still a more affordable option with its $15 per month family plan that lets up to six accounts tap into Apple’s music streaming service. Tidal’s family plan allows each account to connect up to three devices to the service.

This isn’t the first time Tidal has tried to lure in more customers with cheaper pricing options. Earlier this year the company announced student discounts similar to one offered by Spotify. Along with price cuts, Tidal has tried offering exclusive access to albums like Lil Wayne’s FWA and exclusive concerts, but has failed to attract as many new subscribers as it hoped to. As a result the company recently fired its second CEO in six months.

Tidal is Lossless, Apple is Lossy. If you want Lossless, then Tidal is the solution, if you want Lossy, then Apple or Spotify, etc. are the solution. Some people don’t mind spending more on Lossless because they spent more money on audio equipment and they can hear the difference. They are just trying to attract consumers.

I personally wish Apple hadn’t wasted money on Beats and just bought Tidal instead and then offered two different pricing, one for Lossy and another for Lossless and let the consumer decide which price point they wanted. Yeah, there aren’t as many people that are going to buy Tidal because the average person doesn’t have lots of money in audio equipment.
