John Mayer is world renowned for his skill at plucking strings on a guitar while singing breathy love lyrics. He’s also well known as a lover of expensive mechanical watches, but when it comes to the future of wrist wear, Mayer admits pretty much everyone’s just going to buy an Apple Watch now.

“We’re all going to end up with the Apple Watch, I don’t care what you say,” says Mayer. “Even if you have to wear it on your right hand.”

In a New York Times profile detailing Mayer’s love for watches — his own collection is estimated to be worth tens of millions of dollars — the champion of Horology says he’s even started thinking of concepts that will turn Apple Watch into a pocket watch.

“I have a concept that you can slot the Apple Watch into a pocket, as a pocket watch,” said Mayer. “I think it’s a cool device, but there’s got to be another place to put it. I can’t give up precious wrist space for an Apple Watch.”

Mayer made numerous appearances at Apple events, and was dubbed as “one of the best guitar players who’s ever lived,” by Steve Jobs himself. The Apple co-founder had some tough criticism for Mayer too, telling Walter Isaacson, “he’s just blowing it big time. I think he’s a really good kid underneath, but he’s just been out of control.”

Despite the diss from Steve, Mayer’s love for Apple is still strong, even if the company is about to destroy everything he loves about being a watch connoisseur.

“The watch community gets its power from being esoteric,” says Mayer, predicting that everyone’s going to be watch-nerds now. “We don’t want everybody to be involved in it.”
