If you’ve been browsing the Internet every day in the hope that someone’s going to announce a jailbreak for the third-generation Apple TV you bought back in March, then look away now. iOS hacker Pod2g has confirmed that neither he, nor any other hacker he knows of, is working on an exploit for the Apple’s latest set-top box.

In a tweet published this week, Pod2g wrote:

ATV3 jailbreak: I have no news sadly, I’m not currently working on it nor anyone that I’m aware of. Sorry…

Both the first- and second-generation Apple TVs have been successfully jailbroken, opening them up to all kinds of features and services that Apple doesn’t support — like web browsers, XBMC, and more. But the latest model is yet to be cracked. It’s unclear why no one is working to change that, but it’s possible that Apple has successfully plugged all the holes that previously made jailbreaking the device possible.

Because of this, demand for the second-generation model has rocketed. Priced at just $99 when it first launched — like the latest model — the device can now be found fetching upwards of $250 on eBay.

    i think we’re all hoping for an actual app ecosystem to be announced for the new ATV… it would make sense, & that’s certainly why i didn’t buy a 2nd-gen model earlier this summer.

    that said, if apps *aren’t* announced this fall, the process of getting a jailbreakable model now is going to suck. :-\

    Apple purposely crippled the device so I’ll just buy a Mac Mini to do what I need to do.

    I’ll patiently wait for OUYA to be released next year, XBMC team are working on a port for it at the moment. Don’t really care weather the ATV3 can be jailbroken or not after I saw the kickstarter vid for ouya

    Your story is wrong…. Once again for cult of slack. They are not getting $250 as NO ONE IS BIDDING ON THEM OVER $200! The highest bid is $165

    Get over yourself, troll; I hadn’t come back to the thread. Here’s a take. Here’s another.

    Now think about the actual object for more than a few seconds. Let’s ignore all impossibilities about the production of the device and assume that even one of them exists. It’s an Android phone in a box plugged into a wall, so you can’t take it anywhere. And it doesn’t make calls. So it’s far worse than anything anyone already has in their pocket now, and extraordinarily worse than any iOS device.

    Never mind that any of these devices can already put stuff on a TV screen, so it further has less point. Anyone that wants to play games is going to get an iPhone/iPad and AirPlay, they’ll get a proper console with some real processing power behind it, or they’ll use their computer, which is even more powerful still.

    It still serves its purpose, right? Princess..?
