Magnets are a big part of almost all Apple’s products these days — the MagSafe power adapter, the iPad Smart Cover, the closures for all its notebooks and even holding the screen on the iMac.
So why not use magnets in cases? That’s the thinking behind Booq’s shiny new Viper Sleeve for the MacBook Air.
The Viper sleeve, which comes in several colors for both the 11 and 13-inch Airs, is a semi-rigid and totally minimal case for your wedge-shaped notebook. You slide the Air in pointy-edge first and when it is all the way in, the magnetic closure snaps shut. Not zippers, not scratchy catches, just the warm attraction of science’s greatest discovery for sticking things without glue.
The 11-incher weighs in at 0.78 pounds (360 grams) and the 13 at 0.95 pounds or 430 grams. All are made from jute with a nylon interior.
If I ever get an Air, I might think about this case. It seems to offer decent protection without being bulky, heavy or — the horror — ugly. Both are available now for $40 and $50.
