AT&T announced Friday, October 14 that it saw a record number of iPhone activations on its network. The iPhone 4S was made available to US customers on AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint this morning.

The carrier confirmed to BGR:

“As of 4:30 pm ET today, AT&T had already activated a record number of iPhones on our network – and is on-track to double our previous record for activations on a single day.

These record volumes may produce slower activations for some customers, though our systems continue to run at record levels.”

Despite the fact that many were unable to activate their new iPhones on AT&T today, the carrier still calls the iPhone 4S its “most successful iPhone launch” to date.

AT&T alone was responsible for 200,000 of the 1 million worldwide pre-orders that were placed last Friday.

figures – spent five hours in stores and on the phone to find out if I didn’t pre-order my phones from Apple I’d be using them right now. As it is I have two bricks and have to wait at least 24 hours to see if they connect to the network. This is a successful launch? Never again. Hopefully, T-mobile will remain an independent company and offer the iPhone 5 in the spring.

At 6:30 PM EST, I went to att.com/activation and followed several quick steps and was activated within 3 minutes. Is this problem only for NEW AT&T customers?

Bought he new iPhone, upgraded and activated in 10 minutes, zero issues as usually. AT&T has been a great carrier, since original iPhone day 1. Get over the nonsense, AT&T is an excellent carrier when you consider the amount of data they support. Verizon on my iPad has been terrible. Def going back to AT&T for the iPad 3.

Preordered 3 iPhone 4S from Verizon, all three arrived mid afternoon. Had trouble activating 2 of the 3, which required calling Verizon, waiting on hold for 10 minutes each, and after giving the the MEID, then I could activate the phones. However, while I was on the phone with Verizon, then tried to sell me the insurance again, which I had already ordered the a week ago when I preordered the phones.

However, I am glad that happened because I think I will order AppleCare+ instead, which is cheaper in the long run.

It’s record “number,” not “amount.” A *number* of activations, an *amount* of Jell-o. Get it?

Will not use AT&T again for phone purchase, my own personal IPhone 4S launch has been delayed by 3-4 days. Very disappointed they blew it.

Received phone via UPS @ 9:00 a.m. Finally got activated at 3:30 p.m.
