As an alternative to the iPhone 5 mock-up we posted last week, Mac Magazine put together this great concept of what the iPhone 5 could look like.
Looks pretty good to us. It mostly aligns with what we’ve been hearing: a 4-inch display, a new thinner design and a new antenna location. We’re a little skeptical Apple could actually fit an entire smartphone into an enclosure that narrow, but Cupertino has surprised us all before by doing the impossible.
Here are the rest of the images. What do you think?

Look at your iPhone 4. Now look at your bumper / case you are using. Look how that hangs over the glass.
Now look at the 4 inch screen concept. Now back to your case. Back to the concept. Is anyone seeing an issue? Does anyone else see that a 4 inch screen means a case / bumper concept cannot work on the phone? Can you imagine a phone that cannot use a case?
Nice mockup. I think the antenna placement here makes sense – either that or on the top of the phone, but not even close to the sides.
The top diagonals would work too… but not the bottom ones – those might get pushed into your face while you’re talking. If you have a giant head. :P
Sold! :-)
Despite the fact that iPhone 4 is a mighty impressive gear all around, I still hope & wish & pray that Apple would increase the width of the phone so that you could text in portrait format in one hand without mishits etc.
Case makers can work it out.
Case makers can work it out.
Not a big issue, most cases wrap around the top and bottom and have very little over the sides. This may promote more hard cases as its going to require a little more precession.
The bezel looks too thin IMHO. I’d still buy it, but it’s awkward looking…

I hope they make the iPhone 5 a lil more resistent… no glass for me.
looks really good, but i would prefer a full frontal screen
The rear camera looks kind of ugly, too big…although a bigger lens would be great for the image quality
Wait, wasn’t it supposed to be sim-less? Somewhere in an old post an author said they may be working on a universal design with no sims involved, given that it’ll work on AT&T, Verizon, and supposedly more USA carriers. In which case somehow will save them money on production.
It wouldn’t be a big issue really. Apple changed the design 3 times already. 2G to 3G/3GS universal, and i4.
iPad 2 had a completely redesigned casing from it’s thick heavy design to a more thinner lighter one, and was changed from it’s flat brick to a curve shape like an iMac.
Just have to settle for the fact of buying another new slew of cases.
sounds like an “old spice” TV commercial LOL
I think the white iphone looks goofy. The solid black to solid white just looks bad without some room around the screen. It’s not sleek. The black one looks alright. The ear speaker looks weird too. Otherwise…good stuff
I agree, but as it has been said, I’m sure case makers will find a way. Most likely, I can see made-to-fit cases that slide firmly onto the phone from the backside.
Quite a nice mockup. We know Apple wants to go thinner and a larger screen without making the device any bigger (well slightly bigger) is a major plus.

Yeah, because Apple is going to worry about the case makers. Or even their own bumpers over some possible great design.
yes please! totally beautiful
I would make a case that goes around the top and bottom and covers the back, not the sides
I was thinking the same thing!
Looks pretty close to reality. Like it.
Seems kind of bad to me.
They lost me when they pointed to the plastic antenna separators, and claimed they were “new antenna locations.” They also don’t show the extra separators that will be needed for the four antennas. I mean the phone wouldn’t actually work without them.
If they fail on very basic things like that, I don’t trust the rest of their info.
They are as likely (or unlikely) to be right as anyone else making a wild guess.
Actually we don’t know that they are going to a larger screen. It would be a very “un-Apple” thing to do so it’s certainly not a lock by any means.
The whole “larger screen” and “edge to edge screen” *may* be true, but they come from one questionable source if you trace it back. If Apple actually does change the size of the screen to “answer” the large screen Android phones, it would be a first for them. They don’t usually care about what the other manufacturers are doing.
That is just some dude’s 3D modelling project …
It’s just a concept… its not like they were claiming that this most definitely 100% was what the iPhone 5 would look like. Sure they might’ve missed a few things, but then again, thats why it’s just a concept, not the real thing…
Why not just design a phone with material that is of high quality, durable, & is prone to good reception so you don’t have to spend money to buy a case?
Just like bad hair cut, it’s not going to be the next iPhond
I like this mockup: http://forums.macrumors.com/at…
beautiful, great concept and good design. So if money is not an issue then I must bring it home!
… i think that Apple will create a special case for the new iPhone like they did for the iPad 2 … so that the problem with covering part of the display can disappear .. personally am very curious what will be the new cover, if there is one of course .. will it be a magnet type or something even better !
People like reselling their phones/like having them look nice.
yesss!!!! if the the iPhone 5 came with little smart covers. i would die XD
