If you’re a network administrator in love with the svelte, stackable design of Apple’s Xserve line, you’d better stock up: Apple has announced that they will be discontinuing the Xserve line starting January 31st, 2011.

In an uncharacteristically blunt announcement of future plans, Cupertino has said flat out that they will not be developing a future version of XServe, and that they will stop selling the server Mac at the end of January. Nonetheless, Apple will continue to honor warranties, and will also continue to sell the existing 160GB, 1TB and 2TB Apple Drive Modules for Xserve through the end of 2011, or until they sell out.

For businesses that depend on the Xserve, Apple has two obvious suggestions: either start buying Mac Pros with Snow Leopard Server Installed, or opt for the Mac mini with Snow Leopard server if you’re on a budget. Apple will help you transition to these new server solutions as needed.

It’s the end of an era: Apple’s Xserve line has been around since May 2002, and they’ve updated the hardware fairly regularly ever since. Sure, the Mac mini makes a great and affordable server, but we’re sorry to see the stalwart Xserve go after so many years.
