With iCloud Looming, Amazon Ceases Sale Of MobileMe

By •

mobileme

Amazon.com has just stopped all sales of MobileMe. It’s almost as if they know something’s coming that could blast their recently unveiled Cloud Locker music streaming service out of the water. There’s an iCloud on the horizon.

Amazon, of course, is late to the game in ceasing sales of MobileMe. Apple has previously stopped sales of the boxed versions of MobileMe, recommending that new subscribers who want to get through the transition between MobileMe and whatever’s coming next just sign up for a 60 day free trial. You can’t even find MobileMe in Apple.com’s online search forms.

What will replace MobileMe? Best guess is that Apple will leverage their massive North Carolina data center to not only beef up MobileMe’s existing capabilities and more strongly integrate those services into iOS and OS X 10.7 Lion, but also finally jump iTunes to the Cloud.

Given what a debacle the MobileMe brand has become — ever since it’s failed launch, it’s been snarkily referred to as MobileMess — it seems like a brand change is inevitable, especially considering the fact that Apple just spent $4.5 million on the iCloud.com domain name.

Obviously something “new” is coming. But “You can’t even find MobileMe in Apple.com’s online search forms”? That’s not the case at all. Just did a search from the main page and found it no problem. And their main url is still there: http://www.apple.com/mobileme/  I doubt they’ll ditch the MobileMe moniker. You can’t even find MobileMe in Apple.com’s online search forms”? I have renewal of family plan coming up May 23rd.  Hope it comes out before then.

MobileMe is still on Apple’s web site, just where it’s always been. Go to apple.com, click on “Mac” in the menu bar. Then click “Applications”. You simply can’t miss it, right there between iWork and Safari. The Features and Pricing pages are still exactly the same as they ever were.

You know, you might just want to go ahead and retract this whole article. Amazon still lists MobileMe as in stock in both individual and family pack licenses. Simply go to amazon.com and type mobilme in the search.

Hey John, are you making your stories up now? Gerenm is correct. Amazon has not stopped selling mobile me. What’s more, the idea that Amazon would stop selling mobile me because the next iteration is could “blust stupid.ow  their recently unveiled Cloud Locker music streaming service out of the water” makes no sense.

John might have been a bit clearer. It appears Amazon has stopped selling boxed copies of MobileMe through its own distribution centers. There are still links on Amazon pointing to smaller Amazon third-party stores, but they seem to be clearing out older boxes copies.

     Bingo.
