Want Better iPhone Reception? Ask For A Glass

OK, this is a little WTF, and I haven’t yet been able to verify it myself (because reception’s pretty good where I live), but: Boris Veldhuijzen van Zante over the The Next Web says he’s discovered a trick to improve iPhone 4 reception: stick it in a glass.

To whit:

“A few years ago one of the waitresses there discovered (how?) that if you put a phone in an empty glass it dramatically improves the reception. The Pasta e Basta restaurant is basically stuck in a concrete basement so reception has always been awful. But since they found out about this trick they at least have had enough reception to make and receive calls.”

So readers, can this be true? Please avail yourselves of poor reception and glassware immediately: let’s put this to the test.

Coming soon: iPads in buckets and MacBook Airs in cut crystal vases. Possibly.

I find this easy to believe. A bowling lane near where I live is in the basement of a very old building and it’s called the black hole of cell service… That is unless you put your phone in an ashtray (unused of course) on the scorers table. Then you get acceptable reception.

Uhm… The left arm of my favorite chair gets two bars compared to one bar on the right arm. Go figure.

sooo stupid. glass is radio transparent. This is a very, very old iPhone trick for making the *sound* better, nothing more.

I dont know about signal reception but for years I’ve been dropping my iphone in an empty large “souvenir” style plastic cup, speaker side down, when I take a shower and am getting ready in the mornings and want to listen to a podcast or audiobook. Just about doubles the sound and I didn’t have to buy anything new to do it.
Doesn’t do you any good though when your on a phone call, people say I sound weird.

doesn’t work in germany. But especially today we have 3 bars reception.

I can certainly confirm this works. At work I have to fight for a bar of signal. If I’m lucky and find the sweet spot which changes daily, I’ll get a bar. I put my phone, speaker down in a glass that covers only half of the phone. I now have 3 bars!
