Personally, I don’t quite understand what’s so special about an old Apple prototype, especially one that doesn’t work. But clearly someone does, because this iPhone 4 prototype is currently getting bids of over $1,700 on eBay.

The device was first discovered by This Is My Next and is listed on eBay as an “Apple iPhone 4 black APPLE GENUINE PROTOTYPE, TESTER.”

Similar to the device discovered by Gizmodo before the iPhone 4’s official launch, and many of the other Apple prototypes that have surfaced, this iPhone doesn’t feature a real model number, and is labelled with “XXXXX” instead. It also has “DF1692” etched on to the glass on the front and back of the device, which is the unique code that Apple uses to keep track prototype devices and which employees they are assigned to.

Other indications that this device is a prototype is the “XXGB” label on the rear, and the missing “+” and “-” symbols from the volume buttons.

At the time of writing this story, bidding on this device is currently up to $1,725, however, the auction did reach a whopping one million dollars before the seller had to cancel some illegitimate bids:

Due to non-legitimate bidders I am canceling “some” bidders and I am requesting all potential buyers to EMAIL ME FIRST. If you don’t email me OR If you don’t have “appropriate feedback” your bid will be cancelled. Thank you
