If you’re in Indiana, you’re likely using an iPhone. However, in California — home of Silicon Valley — Android probably rules. Most Apple iPhone and iPad users are in the North U.S., while the majority of Android users are in the southern U.S. states, according to the findings of a survey tracking which tracked mobile ad clicking by device maker, all mapped by location.
The map, compiled by mobile ad firm Jumptap, doesn’t track where iOS or Android devices are purchased, but used. There are some surprising findings, such as RIM still clings onto media-saavy New York State. BlackBerrys are most likely to be found in North Dakota as well as neighboring South Dakota. Meanwhile, the Midwest, Ohio region and much of the East Coast are heavy iOS users, according to the survey.
Aside from having an advantage in your next game of Trivial Pursuit (Q: Which smartphone dominates in Texas? A: Android), there are some data of interest to marketers. For instance, the Sony Ericsson device is the Android handset that comes closest to delivering ad clicks equal to iOS. Additionally, if you knew California was Android and Illinois was iOS, you could save a bundle advertising your local Monterey pizza shop on a Droid and use an iPhone for selling corn dogs in Champaign.
What about you? Where are you and do you have an iOS device or Android? Does it fall within these party lines? Let us know in the comments.

Makes sense the south would choose an Android, only intelligent people use an iPhone. lol ;)
Well, most of my friends and I(in south MIssissippi) would LOVE to have iPhones… Sadly, the only company that has really good service in our area is a regional carrier that only offers Android devices.
Yikes, that’s quite insulting.
North…iOS…South is always on the losing side
I live in Arkansas, Everyone in my family and extended family all have iPhones.
Thats how it is here in Arkansas. It was alltel who Verizon Bought. Since Verizon pushed Andriod so hard, thats what a lot of people have…
Yeah but dumb people use AT&T.
I think this has more to do with carriers (the south has some great regional carriers) then phones. I would love an iPhone. But I’m not leaving my carrier (Cellular South) to get one. I still get unlimited-nationwide voice, data and text for a great price compared to what AT&T or Verizon offer. If my carrier changes their plans I would consider a new carrier, but until then it’s not worth it.

I don’t even know one person in CA that doesn’t have an iPhone 4.
I expected phones with physical buttons to be more popular in Wisconsin (where I am). With a 6 month winter needing gloves, a touch screen is sometimes an issue. That said, I like my iPhone4
Three theories: 1) iPhone dominant areas are a function of the strength of AT&T’s network in those areas. 2) The iPhone is “premium product,” costing $200 a pop, whereas there are lots of low-cost Android and BB options… iPhone adoption may be a function of demographics (ie how many people in a state can afford a $200 phone plus data sub). 3) Inverse of #1… iPhone adoption is driven not by strength of AT&T, but prevalence of Verizon in a given state… more Verizon iPhone in a state pushes up overall use of iPhones in that state.
Here in Mississippi the best cell phone provider is CellularSouth, no iPhone obviously. AT&T’s coverage is terrible and Verizon is new here. If CS ever gets the iPhone I think Android use will fall off. It’s why I don’t have a smart phone (but I do have an iPod touch).
No matter how much of these reports come out… I always see more iOS devices out and being used.
Come on California!
This map is complete crap. How can iOS dominate the market in Montana, when we only got the iPhone a few months ago. AT&T has only set up shop in MT in the last few months… and the Verizon iPhone launched about the same time. This may include iPods and iPads as well but I can assure you, Android destroys iOS in Montana market share.
yummy bait for everyone!
Easy killer
There is no way that Android “rules” Washington State.
Can I say in my bias opinion that Android users must be more likely to be clicking on ads, especially Flash ones? ;-)
And why no data for the other states? Seems like this sort of data gathering would be pretty straight-forward and it’s not like those states don’t exist or have cellphones…
I’m In California, and I use an iPhone

How humble.

So, I guess that means you’re using an Android, Jonathan? I mean, since you’re a judgmental moron who judges people you don’t know based on their area of residence, I’d only assume that your judgment regarding “intelligent people” applies to yourself?
I’m from the South and have an iPhone. Would you like to make any other bigoted, stereotypical remarks directed at me? Please feel free to show the world what an ass you are.
Next you will be saying that black and hispanic people use android.
I see more Android devices in West Michigan but then I work in IT and geeks tend toward Android although they like Macs over Windows.
I live in Texas and just how many of Yankee congressmen did we pick up this census? Four? Five? We lost the civil war but we are winning the economic one now. And I’m not sure about this statistic. At least in the oil business and lots of medicine, iOS is dominant.
One thing though: if you Yankees come to Texas to get a job, and we have them here for the asking, please do NOT tell us how it’s done up North. If you were successful, you’d still be there.
