The iPad 2 Gets An Official Dock Accessory

Apple allowed one new iPad 2 accessory to go unmentioned during yesterday’s launch event: the official iPad 2 Dock.

Priced at just $29, the new iPad 2 Dock doesn’t really change all that much from the last model, although it’s obviously been updated a tad to accommodate the new iPad’s thinner form factor.

Like the last model, it features a regular Dock connector, so you can plug a USB cable or a 10W AC adapter into it to sync, charge or sync & charge your iPad 2 simultaneously. Additionally, there’s a 3.5mm audio out jack, allowing you to pump your iPod library to a beefier set of speakers, if need be. You can even hook up the new Apple Digital AV Adapter ad connect your iPad 2 up to a bigger display via HDMI when it’s docked.

If you want to do any of this, though, bring your own cables: like the first-gen iPad dock before it, the iPad 2 Dock is essentially an attractive lump of molded plastic, and doesn’t come with a single cable to make it work.

What about a keyboard dock. Will the old one work?

More like…Just when Apple releases a smart cover so that you can finally keep the case on when its in the dock, they decide to make a different kind of dock that forces you to have to remove the case. …I think that’s what you meant.

PS. With the amount of iPods people buy, I don’t see any problem with the product not coming with a cable. I personally have like 15 of those stupid cables floating around…if I get another one, i’ll freak!

You can also use the Apple multimedia dock and/or cables, which some of us originally bought for our iPhones, to connect an iPad original or iPad 2 to an HDTV or monitor. The difference is audio and video cables are included in a bulkier device. With the new HDMI cable for the iPad, audio and video are combined in one slim device.

That’s why it’s a “smart” cover. You can snap it right off =)

The iPad 2 Dock also supports other accessories, such as the Apple Digital AV Adapter and the iPad Camera Connection Kit.
