‘Tap Tap Revenge 3′ Nabs 2M Downloads After Going Free

Tapulous, makers of the $1M per month Tap Tap Revenge app for the iPhone and iPod touch, received even more good news on Christmas. ‘Tap Tap Revenge 3′ was downloaded 2 million times since the app became free a week ago.

On Christmas Day alone, ‘TTR3′ had more than 700,000 downloads, more than triple the 200,000 ‘TTR’ experienced on Christmas Day 2008. TTR3 is now the most popular App Store app, reports say. As we reported last week, Tap Tap Revenge is installed on one-third of all iPhone and iPods.

What’s in it for Tapulous to drop TTR3 from 99 cents to free? In October, Apple made it easier for developers to offer in-app purchases. While this can help Cupertino stem some developer defections, the ability also provides a way for companies to easily promote for-fee applications within free App Store entries.

Tapulous appears to be only one of many App Store developers which noticed a dramatic rise in Christmas Day downloads. Downloads rose 1,000 percent on Christmas Day, prompted by a rush of new iPod touch devices given for holiday presents, analysts said earlier this week.

Overall, Apple was surprised by the App Store’s popularity. One App Store investor expressed surprise the service had reached 2 billion downloads in October. The iTunes site has 100,000 apps available now – far outstripping rivals – but could triple that figure in 2010, analysts estimate.
