The wistful tone and open-ended time frame of Steve Jobs’ email announcing another medical leave of absence from Apple has led many to fear the worst when it comes to the charismatic CEO’s health, but a new report suggests that Jobs’ health might actually be better than expected.

In fact, not only is Jobs still making appearances at Apple’s Cupertino campus, but he seemed upbeat, described as wearing a big smile and with a spring in his step.

The report comes from blogger Matthew Cross, who spotted Steve Jobs walking out of 1 Infinite Loop on January 31st while Cross was dropping off a signed copy of his most recent book, which spoke favorably of Jonathan Ive.

Cross didn’t get very far with his book — only as far as the Apple gift store apparently — but when directed to the main building in order to se their facilities, Cross spotted Jobs walking out of the building with “a nice smile on his face” and a “healthy spring in his step.” Even his voice was strong.

Unfortunately, at this point, Cross then began chasing Steve Jobs across the parking lot like a teenage girl pursuing the Beatles, which we’re guessing wiped the smile right off of Jobs’ face. Still, we can’t quite fault Cross’s enthusiasm: I think we’d all feel pretty good to see Steve in such fine spirits so soon after his last, heartbreaking email.
