Good news If you’ve got a Sonos music system and an Apple AirPort Express: a free software update will make your multi-room Sonos system AirPlay compatible.

Available today as a free download, Sonos System Software 3.4 adds AirPlay compatibility to a multi-room Sonos music system. You do need an Apple AirPort Express though, which when plugged into any ZonePlayer’s line-in can be played across multiple systems across the house — so-called Party Mode.

“Today Sonos improves the AirPlay experience with party mode so a music lover can send a song from his iPhone or iPad to all the rooms in a home with perfect synchronization,” said John MacFarlane, founder and CEO of Sonos, in a statement.

It’s a great update for a fantastic system (we love Sonos). It brings Sonos up to par with a number of competing AirPlay-compatible stereos that are starting to hit the market. That it’s a free update is even better. Sonos also updated its iPhone and iPad apps to add multitasking, and introduced a new Controller app for Android smartphones. The Sonos Controller for Android features music voice search — a feature not yet available on iOS.
