The 3G version of Apple’s iPad tablet device will ship “By May 7th,” the Cupertino, Calif. company is telling online buyers Monday morning. Apple, however, appears to be sticking by last week’s statement pre-ordered 3G iPads would be shipped in late April.

In a statement e-mailed to customers who took advantage of the early pre-order opportunity, Apple said the 3G iPads would ship in late April “as communicated at the time you placed your order.”

So, there is a ship date for early pre-orders of the 3G iPad (late April) and a shipping date for later pre-orders and current orders of 3G iPads (May 7).

Last week, Apple announced international iPad sales would be pushed back into May, noting the firm had “also taken a large number of pre-orders for iPad 3G models for delivery by the end of April.”

Determining just when Apple will ship the iPad 3G has become easy as nailing jelly to a tree. Last week a a customer email asked CEO Steve Jobs “will the iPad 3G models still ship on time as planned (end of April) in the US, if you order one today? Or will the 3G US orders be postponed as well?” Jobs had a one-word answer: “Yes.”

Today’s announcement is just the latest slip when Apple said it will ship the popular tablet device. In January, when the iPad was released, the company said the 3G version would be released “in April in the US and selected countries.” A week later, Apple had pushed the date back to “late April.”
