Apple’s guillotine-thin ultraportable laptop, the MacBook Air, is disappearing from shelves all around the country, as reports indicate that the low-end 1.83 GHz and the high-end 2.13 GHz are out of stock pretty much everywhere… and it may very way herald the imminent arrival of a smaller and svelter 11.6-inch MacBook Air.
Although the Apple Store is still selling the MacBook Air, even big name resellers like Best Buy and Amazon are reporting that Apple is withholding the supply of additional notebooks until October 12th, at the earliest.
In other words, Apple’s clearing inventory before mid-October… an interesting period for Apple fans historically, since it’s usually when Apple reveals a new hardware update, like last year’s iMac and MacBook redesigns.
We’ve been hearing rumors of an 11.6-inch MacBook Air since July. According to scuttlebutt, the new 11.6-inch model will be powered by an Intel Core i-series ultra-low voltage processor, and could weigh as little as 2.7 pounds. Like the MacBook, the new MacBook Air will be of unibody construction.
I’m interested to see if these rumors pan out. I’ve pretty much given up on my 10-inch Asus Eee PC 1000HE hackintosh netbook: both the keyboard and display are a tad too small for serious work. An 11.6-inch MacBook Air that got an iPad or MacBook’s battery life would be a serious temptation, and enough to make me give up on netbooks forever.
