LaCie Unveils Two-Inch Portable Hard Drive Rikiki

Lacie's new Rikiki hard drive is available in 250GB, 500GB and 640GB.

Lacie's new Rikiki hard drive is available in 250GB, 500GB and 640GB.

If you’re looking for a sleek and tiny external hard drive, LaCie Wednesday unveiled the Rikiki, a USB storage device able to hold up to 640GB of data. Named after the French word for “tiny,” the drive measures 4.3 inches x 2.5 inches by .5 inches and weighs just 5.5 ounces.

LaCie claims the drive is one of the smallest on the market. According to one review, the storage device beat Seagate’s FreeAgent.

Housed in a brush aluminum enclosure, the Rikiki offers “up to 480Mbits/sec,” LaCie claims. While Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6 compatible, the drive includes Windows-only USB Boost software providing up to 33 percent enhanced speed and performance, according to the company. Backup software is also included.

The Rikiki comes in three flavors: 250GB ($74.99), 500GB ($109.99) and 640GB ($149.99). A two-year warranty is available.

    Two things.
    1) It “beat” the Seagate FreeAgent drive how exactly?
    2) Maybe this unit will work longer since it’s bus powered instead of needing an external power supply.

LaCie drives may look nice, but I’ve had nothing but trouble with them and will never buy one again. Go to your local computer shop instead and pick your favourite manufacturer and snazzy enclosure. Cheaper and better.

So far in 2009, about 50GB short of one terabyte of information lost, thanks to faulty LaCie; the most recent one was last Thursday, and I’m still chanting incantations over it in the hope that it will magically return my lost information.
